MENDOCINO COUNTY POETRY OUT LOUD FINALS AT THE ARENA THEATER
Tuesday, Feb 2, 2010
3:30pm at the Arena Theater, Point Arena, CA


At 3:30pm, on Tuesday, Feb 2nd at the Arena Theater in Point Arena (214 Main Street, downtown Point Arena), high school poets from Point Arena, Mendocino and Fort Bragg competed for the chance to become the Mendocino County representative at the 2010 State Finals of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition in Sacramento.


The Mendocino County Finalist is Xochil Goretsky, 9th Grade, MHS.  She will advance to the California State Finals in Sacramento on Monday, March 15th.  Runner up is Quinn Abelson, with Norma Orozco one point behind.

A collaborative effort of the National Endowment For the Arts, the California Arts Council, the California Poets In the Schools and Arts Council of Mendocino County, Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to memorize and perform great poems. In 2008 more than 250,000 students across the nation participated in the Poetry Out Loud program. COAST HIGH SCHOOL POETRY SLAM (PAHS, PCCHS, MHS, MCHS, FBHS)

4:30pm at the Arena Theater, Point Arena, CA
At 4:30pm, on Tuesday, February 2nd at the Arena Theater in Point Arena, high school poets from Point Arena, Fort Bragg, and Mendocino shared their original poetry at the 10th annual MCOE/CPITS Coast High School Poetry Slam. The event was judged by three Mendocino County poets (Jane Reichhold, Frank Healy, Karin Falkner), with audience response influencing their decision. The slam is sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education and California Poets in the Schools with the generous support of the Arena Theater.

INLAND HIGH SCHOOL POETRY SLAM (UHS, WHS, WCHS)
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
4:00pm at the Willits HS Auditorium, Willits High School, Willits, CA
On Tuesday, February 9th at the Willits HS Auditorium, high school poets from Willits, Anderson Valley, and Ukiah will share their original poetry at the MCOE/CPITS Inland High School Poetry Slam. Three Mendocino County poets will judge the event, with audience response influencing their decision. Join us in support of youth expression!. The event begins at 4pm and is free and open to the public. The slam is sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education, California Poets in the School and was made possible by teachers Michael Ridell (UHS) and Susan Walz (WHS).
 

 

     
COUNTYWIDE HIGH SCHOOL POETRY SLAM ( FBHS, MHS, PAHS, AVHS, UHS, WHS)
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
4:00pm at the Matheson Performing Arts Center, Mendocino High School, Mendocino, CA

On Tuesday, April 20th at the Mendocino High School Matheson Performing Arts Center (MHS Campus, Ford Street, off Little Lake Rd, Mendocino), high school poets from Anderson Valley, Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Point Arena, Ukiah and Willits delivered their original poetry at the 10th annual MCOE/CPITS Countywide High School Poetry Slam.   Two Mendocino County poets (MCWC organizer and poet Maureen Epstein and poet Mickey Chaffin) and two Lake County poets (current Lake County Poet Laureate and three time SF Slam Champion Russell Reza-Khaliq Gonzaga and last year's Lake County Poet Laureate Sandra Wade) judged the event, with audience response influencing their decision. A warm thank you to all the coaches, teaching staff, students, tech crew, and audience members made the event another amazing afternoon/evening of youth expression!  The slam was sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education and California Poets in the Schools, with support from MHS, FBHS, PAHS, PCCHS, UKS, WHS, AVHS.
