MENDOCINO COUNTY POETRY OUT LOUD FINALS AT THE ARENA THEATER
Tuesday, Feb 5, 2013
3:30pm at the Arena Theater, Point Arena, CA

At 3:30pm, on Tuesday, Feb 5th at the Arena Theater in Point Arena (214 Main Street, downtown Point Arena), high school poets from Developing Virtue Boys School in Ukiah, Developing Virtue Girls School in Ukiah, Point Arena High School, Point Arena Community Charter High School, and Mendocino Community Charter High School competed for the chance to become the Mendocino County representative at the March 24-25, 2013 State Finals of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition in the State Senate Chambers in Sacramento.

Our winners are:  Riley Fong, Developing Virtue Boys School in Ukiah, and runner up Abigail Sereta, Developing Virtue Girls School in Ukiah.

A collaborative effort of local teachers, the National Endowment For the Arts, the California Arts Council, the California Poets In the Schools and the Arts Council of Mendocino County, Poetry Out Loud encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

After successful pilot programs in Washington, DC, and Chicago in 2005, the second phase of Poetry Out Loud was launched in high schools across America in the spring of 2006 with tens of thousands of students participating. Last year over 400,000 students competed, and this year—the program’s 7th—Poetry Out Loud continues to grow and will culminate in the National Finals in Washington, DC, on April 28-30, 2013. At the National level, the first place student receives a $20,000 award; second receives $10,000 and the third $5000, and 4-9th place finishers receive $1000 each. Each of the top 10 competitors also receives a $500 donation to their schools for the purchase of books.

The event was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, The Poetry Foundation, California Poets In the Schools, The Arts Council of Mendocino County, and the Arena Theater. For more information about Poetry Out Loud, visit www.poetryoutloud.org

  poetry slam judge

everybody gets:
a plus for writing it
a plus for showing up
a plus for reading it
the rest isn't silence
it might be loud
maybe sweet
or perhaps crushing all shadows
twists and turns
getting lost in a good way
merging into the fast lane
arriving at the perfect moment
with plenty to spare
your words
will always be yours
no matter what they are
