Yellow Sun Poem

Yellow is excited
it looks like a yellow stool, notebook paper,
flowered shirt, pants, yellow zebras and lions
like summer
it smells like bananas, lemons, yellow watermelon
a cheese sandwich, sunflowers, daisies
and yellow jello
it feels like a yellow dog, lemonade, a hard yellow robot
like yellow words on the carpet in our classroom
it sounds like squishy banana slugs
dinosaurs, yellow scrubbers squeaks
rurummm rumm like our school bus
it tastes sweet and sour, like yellow smoothies, lemon sorbet
banana splits, mango ice cream, and lemon pie
yellow is like a painting

Water Falling Down From the Clouds

W hales in blue ocean water, wet trees, bushes, flowers and backpacks
E ggs for breakfast, elephant drink with his trunk
T tub full of bubble bath and boat toys, trickling water, time to play

D ucks made from rubber, dogs in the mud and rain, dolphins in the sea and dripping leaking water
A – apples for lunch
Y – Yellow when the sun comes out, yoyos outside and yucky when we can’t have recess outside!

Wet days are like rain pouring into our brains

The Jungle

One day in the rich green jungle
there was a feast with the lions
lions trap animals
they squeal, bark, scream, whisper
for what they wish for
safety
lions torture animals
over the reef
the sun crushes the shy lion’s back

My Story

My hand is a flame and the paper is the dragon
My hand is a jewel and this paper is my chest
My hand is the coal and this paper is the fire
My hand is the hunter, my paper is the prey
My hand is the stripe, my paper is the tiger
My hand is scratch, my paper is the claw
My hand is the tooth, my paper is the bite
My hand is the clue, my paper is the mystery
My hand is the magic, my paper is the spark

The Girl Butterfly

I am a girly butterfly
I have pink antennas
with perfect magenta wings
I hear my beautiful wings flapping
I feel like a flying model
I see my face in the mirror
I smell my vanilla perfume
I taste my strawberry lipgloss
plus
I fly high like an eagle
my message to my people is
never take my wings off!

Wisdom of the Wolf

I am the gray wolf of the forest
I see dark, gloomy woods
I feel the dry and crackly leaves
against my paws
as I stalk my prey
I sense my terrified prey
wishing it could run away
I hear rapid the heartbeats of my food
I smell the blood of my furry catch
as I taste my trinkets juicy meat
I just wish I could tell the two-leggers
to leave nature alone

I Who Have Earned Wisdom

My eyes deceive me
about what is really there
telling me the world is filled
with overwhelming darkness

the feeling of the wind in my fur
tells me I am wild and free
soaring over treetops through the night

the sound of my voice
drifting back to me on the wind
tells me dinner is near

and the smell of fruit
tells me my cousin is feasting
the taste of insects
tells me I have eaten well

and I head home at the break of day
do not disturb me
do not be afraid of me
understand me
understand us bats

The Inner Griffin

I am a great griffin
I hear tricky and mean lions and leprechauns
I see slimy snakes slithering up a tree
I feel the cold wind blowing
through my long hair
while I soar through the sky
I taste the hot fire rolling out of my mouth
I can see ahead and warn people
about mistakes they are about to make
my message to my people is
to take it one day at a time

The Dolphin Way

I am the dolphin
swimming through seas
nowhere near butterflies, birds or bees
I hear air bubbles
rising from below
never too fast, but never too slow
the baby blue water
strokes against my fins
brushing against my white and gray skin
I smell the coral
down on the floor
covered by the depths of the deep blue and more
I see the deep blue
gliding past me at a glance
the fish in schools and the gulls all at once
I taste last night’s feast
several servings at least
as I watch the sun rise in the far out east
now listen here
my message to you
is to be careful
with the resources
you use

Silly Moment

In a class of poetry
I learn something I already know
in a second
I brag about my poem
then I stumble to blink
five minutes is not a very long time
to blather about a poem
after they think I am done
I go on and on
and they wish they were deaf
in a day
I can fly to Neptune
if only scientists could think
and then agree
in one week
I could think the impossible
and craft a poem or a single word
