Fire from a dragon's mouth
protects his family:
self independence and courageous love.
The smooth, thick blood
running through your veins
fast or slow heals open wounds.

My mind twirls about
when I'm with you.
It's the closeness
and caring between lovers
the fountain of youth
and love floods earth.
It's the journey we travel
to get to happiness.

I am the mirror of the leaders of the future:
a skater on ice.
My mind is a mirror of an eager teacher:
of running mice.
My heart is a mirror of my great people:
a speeding car.
My soul is a mirror of everything that is possible:
beer at a bar.

Ruben Herrera
South Valley HS

I am an artic wind of thoughts.
My own fate watching me grow older.
Eagles flying swiftly through my skies
showing the goodness I have done.

But a chill moves slowly up
my spine to the back of my neck:
sorrow for the pain I have caused to all.
It's an echo that seems to go on forever.

My voices of the things I've done
in the past-in the present
and what I will do in the future.

An uncontrollable force
ever seeking it destination
are the words coming out
of a young rap star's mouth
as he dreams of fame.

He's a broken China dish
taped and super glued back together
in the morning rays of sun
on a dewy flower.

He's safe in a bird's nest
on top of a fat, stubby tree
watching a 5 car pile-up
in the heart of San Francisco rush hour.

Like lava flows down the side
Of a mountain over the bystanders
Of deep sown hatred and depression
Melting away by the love
Of one word.

Erin Hodge
South Valley HS

The non-Spanish stereotype
strives like Emiliano Zapata
on his horse
fighting for his freedom
as my words flow:
words of a passionate poet.
They are leaves of a tree
on a windy day.
Every word
every thought
I got from them.
They're pain
suffering and passion
of my family.

Christina Torres
South Valley HS

A boat setting sail
in the summer current
through fog over the bay
as the ocean waves crash
against shore is like
a candle burning down
after the night sky
has taken the sun.

It's the passion
between two lovers.
They're broken glass
in a frame of doubt
where lily pads dance
circles on the surface
of a deep, green pond.
A cool breeze flows
over the meadows in my dreams.
